Boot Camp MCRD San Diego, Platoon 1071, Graduated September 1976
My platoon had the distinction of having a fatality and a near fatality
occur within days of each other. A Pvt. died during a march just
steps before reaching Mt. MFer from choking induced by a heat
related illness. And a Pvt., just days later, was seriously injured by a
grenade when he dropped it. The instructor threw the Pvt. behind the
safety wall, picked the grenade up and threw it but it hit the bunker
and bounced over the instructor, the safety wall and the Pvt. It exploded
right beside the Pvt. but, luckily, he overcame his injuries to fullfil his
  enlistment.
