| Boot Camp | MCRD San Diego, Platoon 1071, Graduated September 1976 |
| My platoon had the distinction of having a fatality and a near fatality | |
| occur within days of each other. A Pvt. died during a march just | |
| steps before reaching Mt. MFer from choking induced by a heat | |
| related illness. And a Pvt., just days later, was seriously injured by a | |
| grenade when he dropped it. The instructor threw the Pvt. behind the | |
| safety wall, picked the grenade up and threw it but it hit the bunker | |
| and bounced over the instructor, the safety wall and the Pvt. It exploded | |
| right beside the Pvt. but, luckily, he overcame his injuries to fullfil his | |
| enlistment. | |
